There are a few terms that should be defined that will facilitate an understanding of reverse osmosis water filter systems. The terms and definitions are listed below.

Osmosis - the movement of a lower concentration solution through a semi-permeable membrane into a solution of a higher concentration that equalizes the solution on both sides of the membrane.

Semi-permeable membrane - will allow some atoms or molecules through and not others. The most common example is the lining of the intestines or a cell wall.

Reverse Osmosis-membrane is very fine filter that makes drinkable water from salty water. Pure water is one side of the membrane and salty or contaminated water on the other side. Pressure is applied to the membrane to stop then reverse the osmotic process. It is a slow method but it works.

Reverse osmosis water filter systems push water through the semi-permeable membrane trapping the salt or contaminant molecules on one side, while pure water passes through to the other side.
This process's original purpose was to remove the salt from sea water rendering it safe to drink. This type of system is very popular; however they not only remove contaminants, but also remove valuable trace minerals such as magnesium, potassium, and calcium.

There are other methods of water treatment. Distillation is heating the water to an extremely high temperature vaporizing it. It separates the water molecules from those of contaminants at a greater boiling point than water.

Filtration is the process that pushes water through a filter that traps contaminants and releases only pure water. This process is called adsorption. It breaks the bond between contaminants and water molecules so contaminants can stick to the filter.

Again, reverse osmosis water systems are popular and effective. They may remove valuable trace minerals as well. It is best to research the type of filter that is of interest. Read their descriptions and how they work. Customer satisfaction reports may provide an indication also of the quality of reverse osmosis water filter systems as well as other systems.

Black & Decker DCM675BMT 5-Cup Programmable Coffee Maker with Carafe, Black/Stainless

Customer Review: Daily coffee drinker likes this product
I purchased this machine months ago. I program it each night so that my coffee is ready and waiting for me the next workday. If you leave it on it turns off by itself after two hours. I also have a bigger coffee maker but I use that one only when I have a big group of people in the house, otherwise I only use this one. I've had ZERO problems with it. The coffee it makes is good. What else do you need? You make your coffee, you drink it freshly made, and that's it. I purchased this item in Target on sale, but even not on sale it isn't that expensive, considering it is programmable and the timer features. It's a good product and I recommend it. I don't get the negative reviews. What more do you expect from this little machine?
Customer Review: Don't buy it
Poorly designed, awkward to use. The control panel and water gauge are located on the side, thus requiring you to turn the brewer sideways when using. But what you see might as well have stayd out of sight. You cannot "read" the water gauge unless you hold a flashlight on it; impossible to see the water level, because of the dark colors. The control pad is flimsy and too small for easy touch control. The light indicating power on is so small that you have to bend down to be eye level with that light in order to see it clearly, and that eye level is less than three inches above counter top. You could easily leave the power on without ever noticing it. The stainless caraffe is handsome enough, but of course it has no water level indicator to compensate for the unreadable one on the base. I get irritated every time I make coffee.

    Customer Review: B&D Coffee Maker
I like the coffee maker ; However the unit has been made much cheaper than the older version that I think it will not last as long as the older version that is still working fine after 13 years.
Customer Review: Not a quality product
I owned a space saver coffeemaker years back and loved it. I decided to buy the Black and Decker Spacesaver Coffemaker. I ended up returning the first one because it just quit and now my second one is not dispensing all the water when you run the cycle. I will not buy a third one. And yes, it is a s-l-o-w coffeemaker.

Everyone knows that home appliances are very important. After all, no one has time to be hand washing jeans and sheets these days, and having to toast bread over an open fire would certainly not be very convenient! Appliances are very important in our homes, but which ones are the most important? Out of all of the appliances available in stores today, which ones are the ones that would be labeled as "must haves"? This article will touch on the top ten appliances to have at home, and will also back up each one as to why it is in the top ten list.

Number One - Stove: Without a stove in your kitchen you would definitely need a fireplace, unless you planned on eating out at least once a day, if not several times per day. If you were to eat out that often, the money you would spend in a week or two would probably pay for any stove you would like to buy! A stove can boil water, bake a cake, cook chicken, beef or fish, and basically cook or bake anything you need. Most recipes in your cookbook need a stove to complete the recipe.

Number Two - Refrigerator: If you did not buy yourself a fridge you would need to live near a frozen lake or pond in the winter and build an underground cold storage facility for the summer months. Food needs to kept cold to stay fresh. That is a fact of life, and unless you want to cut out giant blocks of ice in the winter for your ice box, you will need a fridge.

Number Three - Washer: Washers are a great appliance to have. There is nothing like stuffing a load of dirty clothes into the modern washer and thirty minutes later having a load of clean clothes. One hundred years ago washing clothes took a whole day to do - and that was if you had a small family!

Number Four - Dryer: Just like its nice to have a washer clean your clothes in thirty minutes, its also great to have a dryer to dry them in the same amount of time. In the winter especially!

Number Five - Dishwasher: This appliance is a lifesaver for a large family, but it is still a blessing to have for two or three people. Nobody likes to wash dishes, and to have an appliance that does all of the work for you is always great! Also, dishwashers don't just wash the dishes, they disinfect them as well.

Number Six - Toaster: Most people like toast, and it has become a staple in the morning. Toasters do the job effectively and fast enough for our fast-paced lives.

Number Seven - Coffee Maker: Even if you don't like the black stuff, you will eventually have people in your home who do like it, and are probably very addicted to it! Coffee is a great ice breaker and something nice to offer to guests.

Number Eight - Blender: Everyone is eating healthier these days and a blender really helps you to do this. A blender can whip up a homemade soup in minutes, or a frozen fruit drink in seconds.

Number Nine - Food Processor: These handy appliances come in all kinds of sizes these days and they are very helpful in the kitchen. Instead of spending an hour chopping up foods for dinner you can do it in minutes with a food processor. Also, if Mom has to go away for a couple of days, instead of buying unhealthy frozen dinners for her family, she can pre-chop all of the veggies needed for meals and just leave some simple instructions that hopefully Dad can follow!

Number Ten - Microwave: When you want to defrost something fast, or heat some leftovers, a microwave is a very important appliance. Also, without a microwave, you could never have any microwave popcorn.

So there it is, a list of the top 10 home appliance must have's.

Household appliances are a great modern time saving device. Whether washing laundry, steaming vegetables in the microwave, or having a dishwasher scrub all of your difficult pots and pans, invest in quality appliances built for style and elegance

Black & Decker DCM675BF 5-Cup Drip Coffee Programmable Maker with Permanent Filter

BandD 5C Program CoffeeMaker, Permanent Filter
Customer Review: Great but needs more heat!
For the price and the features, I don't think you can beat this little guy. My only complaint is that the coffee is not as hot as I'd like it to be, even as soon as it's done brewing. It's not hot, more like warm to very warm. Other than that, it's a great little unit. Just the right size, and very user friendly.
Customer Review: Amazing little brewer for cheap! Able to "Potless-Brew!"
Just right for a quick "Single" cup of coffee. I brew directly into the cup so I don't need (or want) the mid-brewing auto-shutoff for pouring during brewing. On units that have temporary brew-stopping device will not brew directly into a mug or cup. Reason is the little spring-loaded shut-off valve is always on "off" when the pot is removed. So, this unit is just great for a pot-less brewing directly into your mug. Great for the one or two people who want decaf when you're brewing a pot of regular. Linens-n-Things has it for $19.95 less 20% if you get their coupons in local flyers. I paid $16.00, amazing. I don't like permanent filters because they retain the coffee oil after brewing and that oil film eventually turns rancid unless you wash the basket after each brewing with detergent to remove the oil. Does anyone know who makes a 4-cup round paper filter for use? I am using a #2 cone filter but it fits sloppily. Suggestions?

Our house is thought to be a place of peace and refuge. A place we can be safe in. Is it really! With a whole house air purifier, it can be. With cold and flu season upon us, our house is the worst place to be. This article will help you uncover the cold hard facts.

We take all kinds of precautions to help prevent ourselves from catching a cold or flu. We put on our coats, hats, mittens and boots and we try to stay warm and dry. At times we may not even go outside or shopping, etc. because it is raining or cold out. Did you know that the place we think of most as a safety zone, is actually our worst enemy?

Our house can carry more germs, bacteria and viruses than you can be exposed to anywhere else. That is why you might want to consider a whole house air purifier. We spend more time in our homes than most anywhere else and it is a more confined restricted area where germs and bacteria can thrive. There are times in the day, when the light is shining just right, that you can actually see the dust particles in the air. Those dust particles carry germs and bacteria and are just waiting for a place to land. Let's face it, along with dust mites that are probably covering your bed and pillows, is the air you are breathing in the privacy of your own home healthy?

There are many air purifiers on the market today and each has its own unique application. Many are designed for in house use. Some are designed to filter out odors; some are made to eliminate germs and bacteria, where others may get rid of gaseous smells. A whole house air purifier can be ducted throughout your entire home in the duct vents. This can be installed by a professional or you may want to do it yourself. Unlike some air purifiers designed for in home use that only filter a small square footage, the whole house air purifier can filter the air in your entire home, making the air cleaner and healthier to breathe. This will result in fewer colds and flu and make your house the place of safety and refuge you like to think of it as.

Coffee maker reviews can help you find the right coffee machine for you. Finding the right coffee maker that can meet your needs and are up to par with the standards in coffee making can be quite a challenge.

Thankfully, there are a lot of consumer and expert opinions online that can help push you to the right direction. According to coffee machine reviews, there are certain chart-toppers when it comes to specific brands of coffee makers. If you are looking for home coffee makers, you have plenty to choose from.

Most of the products that get great coffee machine reviews come from any one of these great innovative companies, namely Braun, Keurig, Capresso, Cuisinart, Krups, DeLonghi, Gevalia, and Melitta, among many others. Reviews of coffee makers also show that each of these brands have their own special offers that help them win out over the competition.

    Chart-Topping Coffee Makers

Coffee maker reviews name the Braun Tassimo as one of Braun's top products. The Braun Tassimo is a highly innovative coffee maker. Instead of using coffee grounds or pods, the Braun Tassimo produces coffee using Tassimo discs, which are also called T-discs.

These discs are not raw coffee materials. Instead, they are actual disks that contain data about how to prepare certain beverages. The Braun Tassimo coffee maker simply reads the data and prepares coffee based on it. Reviews name this product as one of the most innovative products around.

Keurig also has great products that also get great reviews, such as the B60. The B60 is a great product known for brewing good-tasting coffee and for its convenient features aimed towards the home user. Reviews say that Keurig has a good collection of exceptional home coffee makers.

If you are checking out Capresso, reviews will tell you that its best product yet is the MT500. This product is actually a drip coffee maker, which is one of the reasons why it is widely popular. Drip coffee makers are well-loved for their outstanding coffee taste. But aside from that, the MT500 has a thermal carafe to keep coffee warm longer, an LCD with backlight, and a control panel with soft touch buttons. Although the product is quite expensive, reviews say that the buy is worth it.

As for Cuisinart, they have many great products, which is not surprising because they hold the title of being one of the best and most trusted kitchen appliance manufacturers by homemakers. But when it comes specifically to coffee brewing, Krups can help you find what you're looking for. Krups coffee makers are often reviewed for their innovative nature and excellent coffee production, as well as for the quality of the coffee makers itself. The company also produces a wide collection of coffee maker parts, most of which are appreciated due to their durability and insightful designs.

DeLonghi is another top brand that always impresses consumers and reviewers. Their best feature is the wide collection of coffee makers they produce. It seems that whatever type of coffee maker you are looking for, DeLonghi has the model specifically for you. Gevalia, on the other hand, is mostly known for their thermal coffee makers as well as their dual coffee makers. These coffee makers have two separate pots that can hold 12 cups each, so the coffee maker can produce 24 cups in all.

Melitta is also another coffee maker master. Reviews consider the Melitta Smart and Brew as one of the company's best suits. This product can grind the coffee beans and brew them right afterwards in one fluid process.

    More Options to Choose From

If you are looking for coffee makers, coffee machine reviews will undoubtedly point you towards these brands and models. But should you require more options, you can also check out products from Black and Decker and Bunn. They also have some really great models, such as single-serve coffee makers, filter coffee makers, grind and brew coffee makers, and multiple-cup coffee makers.

Black & Decker ODC440 Spacemaker 12-Cup Coffee Maker

Kitchen counter space seems to be shrinking? Black and Decker ODC440 under cabinet SpaceMaker will brew your coffee using less space. Free up valuable counter space with this 12-cup capacity coffeemaker from a name you trust. Unique "sneak-a-cup" feature allows you to interrupt brewing to pour your "cuppa' Joe." Also features a programmable digital clock, glass carafe, and a removable brew basket and water reservoir for easy cleaning. Automatically shuts off after 2 hours for safety and energy preservation.
Customer Review: Are you kidding me?
It is like they put this on the market without anyone even trying to make coffee with it once. It is so bad, it is almost comical. After all that work hanging it, I discoverd I have to stand there and hold the thing shut for 20 minutes while it brews. I don't know if I have ever seen such a poorly designed product.
    Customer Review: Worthless
Had purchased this as replacement of excellent B&D undercounter coffee maker. Problems began on second day when the 'filter' drawer slid out ever so slightly. It came out enough, however, to leak water and coffee grounds all over the counter top and running down to thte floor. Tried again the next day while watching unit - and did the same. Do not know what options are at this point, but would NOT recommend that anyone purchse this unit ! Gary Anderson Foster City, CA

HEPA is an abbreviation for High Efficiency Particulate Arrestor. These filters are used extensively in air cleaners and vacuum cleaners. HEPA was first developed and used by the USA Atomic Energy Commission in 1940, to prevent the spreading of airborne radioactive contaminants. It was used in the Manhattan Project during the development of the atomic bomb. It remained a classified gadget till the end of World War II, after which it was unclassified and released for commercial purposes.

HEPA air cleaners are manufactured by a number of different producers. One must be able to distinguish between a true HEPA cleaner and a HEPA like cleaner. While the latter ones are cheaper, the former are more expensive but come with a guarantee. Some filters can also require frequent change of parts and therefore are not really cheap in the long run.

HEPA air cleaners are theoretically reputed to stop 99.97% of pollutants with particles smaller than 0.3 micrometers. This has been determined by the EN 1822 [European norm] test. The efficiency of the cleaner also depends upon its location, that is, whether it is located after or before the motor. In case it is located before the motor, the carbon dust produced by it is also caught. Some of the cleaners are equipped with an UV light source to further destroy bacteria and viruses like the influenza virus too. The Clean Air Delivery Rate [CADR] varies from model to model.

These are different from other air cleaners. While the latter work with UV lights and ionizers, HEPA filters physically remove the particles. The filter doesn't act as a mere sieve for the particles. Instead, purification is affected through three methods, diffusion, interception and impaction.

Interception occurs when a particle comes within the distance of one particle radius to a filter fiber and gets stuck. It doesn't work if the distance is greater. Diffusion is best for smallest particles. Particles in the air constantly collide with each other. As a result they travel in a zigzag motion. The smaller the particle, the more it zigzags and the slower is its progress in the air current. Impaction works when a particle is so large that it's unable to adjust to the sudden changes on entering the filter. Due to its inertia, the particle continues on its original path, hits, and gets trapped by the filter fiber. Consequently, chances of hitting the filter fiber are greater. It must be kept in mind that these filters are effective only for airborne particles and cannot be depended on, solely for a healthy environment.

When it comes to buying a coffee maker, one that gets you through the morning, there are so many options that it may drive you crazy. Drifting away from Starbucks and the instant stuff, there are machines that can do the job fairly well. But they must pass through a set of criteria.

    Simplicity

With coffee makers, as with most machines, simple is always better. You don't want too many switches and buttons and overcomplicated procedures. All you want is a cup of coffee. A simple machine, one designed and tested to do one simple thing, and be good at it, tends to work better than a complicated one.

    Function

You want a coffee maker that does the job all the way through, nothing too much, and nothing left half done. Underachievers that don't extract enough flavor, and overachievers that boil the water too much that your coffee gets too bitter; you don't want them.

    Type of Coffee

It pays to know what kind of coffee you love to have from your coffee maker. For most brews, drip coffee makers are all right. For espresso, a dedicated espresso machine is the only one that will do. If you want espresso, but don't want to buy a machine for it, a French press can actually do the trick. Percolators are also good, as they're tried and tested. The coffee you want tells you what kind of coffee maker you need.

    Cup Size

See if the coffee maker makes a decent-sized serving at one go. Decent-sized is relative. If your morning wake up ritual needs two cups, then see that your coffee maker can deliver just that. Some coffee machines limit themselves to serving sizes that are precise, but are annoyingly less or more than what some need. Make sure what you buy neither serves too little nor overflows your cup and wastes all that coffee goodness.

    Reservoir

A good coffee maker should hold enough water for a decent amount of servings at one time. Make sure it can hold a good amount without the reservoir being too big that it takes over the machine. Bad coffee makers tend to have big reservoirs, and cheap machine parts within, just so that they can pass as coffee makers. Do not fall for this. Scrutinize, and choose wisely.

    Value

Everyone wants a bargain, but remember that there's such a thing as a balance between the price and the features. Measure the coffee maker's set of features along with its build and its price. This kind of formula is a good rule of thumb. So this means you'll need to check out the slightly costly items, and visit the reputable shops to get the best "balanced" value. It's not just money at stake here, it's your mornings.

    Brand

It may not seem necessary, but buying a coffee maker from a reputable brand is much better than buying some run-in-the-mill counterpart (unless you've done a great deal of research behind some new or unknown brands). A branded machine can beat any brandless contraption anytime. That's another consumer rule of thumb there. More of a guide, not a rule. When it comes to build quality, features, and overall design, brands like Bunn, Black & Decker, Cuisinart, Braun, and so on are the best there is.

    Easy-to-Clean

Of course, you have to deal with cleaning issues. You want to maintain your coffee maker's service life. Make sure that the crucial parts are washable so that you do not get coffee sticking to them over time. As long as you can wash the important parts like the pot and the reservoir with soap and water, you're good to go.

    Portability

You don't want anything bigger than your counter. If you buy something that can sit snugly at the corner of your kitchen, then you'd want to use it day after day, since it doesn't "intrude" in your kitchen space.

    Safety

Make sure that there are no exposed electric parts; that everything is properly insulated. Sometimes there are spills, and you don't want a shock when you clean up the spill. See if the handles are cool to the touch and children who fumble with them and won't get burned.

Coffee makers come in many shapes and sizes. Simplify your search of your best coffee maker by setting your criteria of what you want from your machine before you start looking for your perfect coffee maker.

Yogi Shinde offers coffee maker ratings and reviews on different brands and types of coffee makers. Helping your find the best coffee maker to suit your needs.
